LIST PICK

MOANING EGO

Kicking off their second album cycle, Sub Pop signings Moaning have revealed a sombre lead single in 'Ego'. Resisting the urge to add the wall of washy guitars, that featured so heavily on their earlier works (see List Picks 'Tired', 'Artificial' and 'Don't Go'), chorus-drenched bass and crystalline synthesizers leave space for singer Sean Solomon's vocal melody to shine through. Positioning themselves between the oxymoronic melancholy of The Cure and the brooding indie-rock of Interpol, 'Ego' feels like their most accomplished piece to date. Solomon explains: "The lyrics are about letting go of your own bullshit to help other people. Wanting to love yourself to love others. The ego can make you feel like you’re the greatest person in the world or the worst. It makes you think your problems are abnormally different which is isolating and rarely true. The song is a reminder that listening to other perspectives is important and beneficial to both parties involved." Moaning's new album Uneasy Laughter will arrive on the 20th of March. -Holly Mullineaux
