NILüFER YANYA GOLDEN CAGE

Here at TMR, we’ve been loyal fans of 21-year-old Londoner Nilüfer Yanya, who has continued to impress and surprise with her open-hearted tracks. From her raw singer-songwriter demo ‘Monsters Under The Bed’, to the genius lyricism of ‘Small Crimes’, to the hand-clapping joy of ‘Keep On Calling’, to the smokey, jazz-infused ‘The Florist’ - Yanya consistently demonstrates her ability to expand genre horizons. Premiered on Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 show, ‘Golden Cage’ sees Nilüfer Yanya at her most adventurous to date. Opening with those distinctive, dusky vocals, Yanya repeats “I would still feel the same” as a sultry saxophone begins to trickle in. The track then opens up into a vibrant page-turner of in-focus acoustic strings, downbeat drums and that rich, expressionate horn. All the way Yanya’s lyrics mesh with the hopping instrumentation, taking on the rhythm and retaining a sense of stream-of-consciousness improvisation. As the young artist continues to build up a consistently decent line of work, we’re beginning to wonder when an album will appear… - HT
