‘Last Sniff’ from Wilma Archer’s collaborative project A Western Circular is a particularly evocative piece of work featuring the living legend that is MF DOOM. The whole piece is slick and brooding with a Gotham-esque graphic visualiser further setting the tone for the duo’s dive into a lesser-seen side of life. The instrumentation fizzes with the kinetic energy of urban life, while MF DOOM’s commentary vivisects the streets, alleyways and underpasses where “the city don’t sleep or take naps” and “plain clothes enemies” hide in full view. The whole track is wonderfully dramatic, painting an ever-more vivid picture with each metronomic snap, cutting rhyme and upward sweep of strings.
