WILL SAMSON SHIMMER (DAY TWO)

Today we have the great pleasure of seeing British-born, Brussels-based musician Will Samson drop another heartfelt, tape-recorded gem. The appropriately-named ‘Shimmer (Day Two)’ follows the previously released title track from Samson’s forthcoming record Welcome Oxygen, and further explores the same curious blend of ambience and folk as its predecessor – showcasing amorphous analog flutterings, artificially-aged acoustic guitars, and Samson’s own hushed, inviting vocal. To be sure, it’s an atmospheric triumph but the strength of ‘Shimmer (Day Two)’ lies not only in Samson’s evident abilities as an experimenter and producer, but in his new-found, wonderfully direct songwriting as well. Speaking on the unexpected flood of creativity that led to the creation of Welcome Oxygen, Samson states that “I could not quite believe it, but I knew that the more honestly I expressed myself, without feeling the need to cover everything in lots of effects or disguise the lyrics in cryptic words, the more easily new music would appear. The ideas came flooding out in the most natural & cathartic way I had ever experienced.” Watch out for the full-length release via Talitres on September 8th, and be sure to catch Samson’s inevitably inspired live show too. –KJ
