If a combination of Lana Del Rey and SKOTT sounds like our cup of tea, well stick the kettle on and press play on Wes Reeve’s newest output ‘Never-ending Summer’. As with previous List Pick ‘Honey, I’, this song is another uber-dreamy piece of songwriting from the Los Angeles talent. The track builds slowly: first a soft-struck drum announcing the entrance of Wes Reeve’s multi-textural voice, and then playful piano notes, and then resplendent harp strings. After around a minute of this paced introduction, the various fairy tale elements surge into a layered and harmonised chorus that creates the soundtrack to the story at the heart of ‘Never-ending Summer’. As the songwriter tells us, it’d about “a couple that drives off a cliff during a storm. In the afterlife they end up reliving that same day over and over. In a way, Never-ending Summer is about finding your perfect person and being with them forever.” Written as a stream-of-consciousness, Wes Reeve takes inspiration from childhood memories and fairy tales, but what we hear most here is her divine imagination. - Hannah Thacker
