STILL A GREAT NIGHT DEAD BIRDS & THE VIRGIN MARY

If your ears have been pummelled by the relentless churn of saccharine Christmas tunes this holiday season, take heart - your Yuletide antidote has just dropped in the form of Still A Great Night’s new single, ‘Dead Birds & The Virgin Mary’.  Don’t let the song title put you off though: there are no deceased pigeons involved, just a witty socio-political commentary on the hypocrisy of contemporary ‘Christians’ who propagate evil in Jesus’ name, spoken from the POV of his dear Mum via SAGN’s brainchild, Alex Feder. Set against a backdrop of sleigh bells, opulent strings and acoustic guitar, we hear the innocent murmurings of a hopeful virgin Mary, musing on the boundless potential of her new-born progeny. Her monologue is bittersweet (spoiler alert: Jesus dies at 33) and periodically crescendos into unbridled maternal rage, dissolving abruptly into the painfully ill-fated chorus of ‘I’m in love, love, and nothing could go wrong this Xmas morning..’ Filmed to a live audience amidst twinkly Christmas trees at LA's Lucy’s Meat Market, ‘Dead Birds & Virgin Mary’ manages to be timely, sweetly melodic and surprisingly optimistic, despite Feder’s palpable sadness at the state of the World. - Ayla Owen.
