RICHARD WALTERS NOTHING BUT ADORE YOU

If you’re yet to come across the name Richard Walters, then let us introduce you. Walters is a prolific songwriter from Oxford, who has released four studio albums, countless singles and currently presides over the independent record label Pilotlights Music (home to BE GOOD and Grace Lightman.) In 2016, he shared his latest album, A.M., which featured standout singles ‘U’, ‘July Bones’ and ‘Awards Night’. Less than a year on and Walters returned with his singularly emotive style in new track ‘Nothing But Adore You’, which was co-written with acclaimed singer-songwriter Tom Rosenthal and record by long-time collaborator Patrick James Pearson. Rich in atmospheric reverb, a piano sounds in behind Walters’ clarifying vocal that comes across open and honesty. His words seem lifted from a conversation between two former or turbulent lovers, “I’m trying to tell you how it is, everything I said was true, I did nothing but adore you,” which then degrade into mechanical repetitions. The vocal effect has a resonance of David Bowie’s Blackstar, fitting for a song which appears to be a farewell of sorts. At the last, the production is stripped back for Walters' final line, the emotion almost cracking his voice before dipping off into silence. - HT
