Despite his relatively low profile, Oliver Coates is an extremely talented young, experimental composer with friends in high places. Having spent the last few years collaborating with the likes of Radiohead and Mica Levi, Coates has just announced another solo record by the name of Shelley’s on Zenn-La.Taking its unusual title from a nightclub in Stoke-On-Trent and the home of Marvel superhero Silver Surfer, perhaps unsurprisingly, the first taste of the album is a weird and wonderful mash-up of squelchy synthesizers, bassy cello parts and atmospheric strings. Elevated by soaring vocals from Chrysanthemum Bear and Malibu alongside Kathryn Williams' gorgeous flute playing and trip-hop-inspired beats, 'A Church' is a religious experience like no other. If you're lucky enough to have a ticket for Thom Yorke at the Roundhouse tonight, be sure to get there early for Oliver Coates. -Holly Mullineaux
