CRUMB AMAMA

Sophisticated dream-pop outfit Crumb share the excellent news of a forthcoming album with its swirling title track ‘AMAMA’. Following the early success of their Locket EP and subsequent studio albums Jinx and Ice Melt, AMAMA was produced alongside Johnscott Sanford in LA. Taking its name from that of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lila Ramani’s grandmother, the lead single (and undoubtedly the rest of the LP) is a touching tribute. Sampling AMAMA’s vocals, and inserting them into a glitchy backdrop of pitch-shifted guitars that glisten with the instantly recognisable tones of a Digitech Whammy pedal, punchy drums provide a strong foundation for all the blissed out strangeness. As ever, Crumb’s melodic bass lines worm their way into your subconscious as ethereal synth elements ripple with disorientating effect. Ramani’s reverb-soaked vocals tie everything together as she elaborates: “AMAMA is dedicated to my namesake, my grandmother, whose voice is sampled throughout the song. A video sent to me over WhatsApp of her singing originally inspired the melody and ethos of the song, from which I built its glitchy, warped foundation. It’s a love song! My partner and Crumb's creative director [Abraham El Makawy] directed the video, which combines his family's archival footage of the neighbourhood we grew up in, home videos from the band, as well as drawings from 702 fans who helped us animate the last part of the video. The song is the title track and spiritual centre of our new album.” AMAMA will be released on the 17th of May. -Holly Mullineaux
