ASSORTED PLEASURES SLOW ONE

There seems no shortage of alt-rock talent emerging from Australia’s wide, varying and ever-evolving music scene. One such band worth making a note of is Assorted Pleasures, who recently changed their name from The 9th Division, a group of teenagers from the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne's South East, who described their style as “lo-fi tunes, taking cues from traditional pop and rock.” Over the past year, this Australian four-piece have developed their sound from a muddy, beach-style demos to the chaotic indie-rock of ‘Only Once’ through the the emerging melodies and fiery Strokes-esque bravado in last month’s release ‘Blindside’ and finally to their most accomplished output to date - ‘Slow One’. True to its name, this recording takes a laid-back approach, with a leisurely tempo, dreamy guitar melody and languid, fuzzed-out vocals. The band continues to meander through these lo-fi textures, before breaking into howling guitars and heavy-handed drums for an almighty breakdown that displays just how far this young outfit have come since those early, rough demos. - HT
