Toronto-based Joseph Of Mercury has been distinctly quiet since the release of ‘Lips’ almost a year and a half ago. Yet after taking down all of his Soundcloud content he’s back with a new single and new sound in the shape of ‘Without Words’. The track itself is undoubtedly Joseph Of Mercury’s signature indie-pop, but it has a new nostalgic, '60s feel. Simple chords, vintage string pads and pulsing synths create a retro feel that draws on the sounds of George Harrison, Bowie and The Smiths. The chorus itself is particularly standout, with the artist showing off his piercing falsetto: “You only need touch to know”. Fingers crossed that ‘Without Words’ is the sign of things to come from Joseph Of Mercury.–HM
