HENRY CARR TEENAGE DISCO QUEEN

Los Angeles would appear to be a hotbed for sage youth who turn to creativity to speak about the unique experience of growing up right now. One such newcomer is Henry Carr, whose lo-fi pop reaches deep into the soul. He has literally only been releasing music this month, already racking up five new songs, seemingly put up online at will. Our personal favourite of the bunch is ‘teenage disco queen’, a slow tempo pop jam that explores Carr’s experience of coming out with the fear of disappointing his family, questioning his nature and the minefield that is religion, specifically Christianity here. The young Californian’s voice has a glassy tone, singing of the dark reality to those who can relate and those who cannot - “but you don’t see me / living like a banshee / swimming in a black sea / shitting on my family.” This is an unflinchingly honest account of an individual’s coming out process, and only one part of the story, as Henry Carr’s is still releasing new music, there’s many more chapters to be found from this surprising young talent. - Hannah Thacker
