DAYO BELLO SOMETHING TO YOU

‘Something To You’ is the perfect introduction to South-East London artist Dayo Bello, because it’s simply sublime. Opening with gospel keys, Bello’s first sage line might take you off-guard: “It’s so hard to love you when you’re distant, / You’ve been running from yourself, / You don’t know how to trust, / You’ve been happy before, / And you’ve forgotten how to love.” Dripping with bluesy vulnerability, Bello’s third ever track is a poignant plea for his amour to open up to him, to let him into their lives, to let him be an integral part of their lives. As time goes on, most of us acquire damage and carry that on into future relationships, we put up walls, a pre-emptive defence against more pain. Somehow this 20-year-old musician has already worked this part of life out, he understands that pain, but he’s as his soulful admissions indicate, he’d happily risk the hurt for a chance at love. There’s some truly impressive moments in ‘Something To You’, like the jazzy stutters which climb into soulful crests that display Dayo Bello’s vocal capabilities, and we’re eager to hear more from this young British talent. - Hannah Thacker
