Today at TMR, we’re proud to premiere the moving new single ‘Russian Doll’ from singer, composer, writer, producer and director SOKOL. Exploring the hidden depths of human feeling through a vast array of electronic beats, haunting vocal samples, stop-start percussion, and intense lyricism, SOKOL has made a cinematic landscape to explore humanity’s relationship with pain. A the Czech artist explains, “The song is about how people deal with pain, emotion, and how they react to it. There is no standard ‘mode of self defence’ that kicks in when dealing with this stuff, everyone deals with it in different ways, and people should be patient and understanding with others going through something that affects them in this way. These painful things we deal with are the things that make us human, pain, although hard to deal with, is necessary for life.” The title, ‘Russian Doll’, is a powerful metaphor for the walls we build up around ourselves, each new trauma adding another layer until our true selves, are “lost but not forgotten”. Through the surging storm of instrumentation and emotional turmoil, there is glimmer of hope in the soft, peaceful vocals of SOKOL; our subconscious whispering the demons away. - HT
