With incredible releases from Noname, Lady Leshurr and Nadia Rose to name a few, 2016 has seen a wealth of young female talent hit the urban scene. Yet North London’s own Little Simz’s continues to hold her own with ‘Poison Ivy’, the first release from her sophomore album Stillness In Wonderland. ‘Poison Ivy’ features long-time collaborator Tilla, and the production from SHE is wavy, light and unexpected. The track opens with old-school, jazzy guitar chords, which are supported by world-influenced drums and a solid bass. Over the top, Simz’s vocals muse a relationship gone wrong, always coming back to the refrain ‘This is toxic I know’. The track cleverly showcases Simz’s musical brand of hip hop, whilst also setting the bar high for her album. Stillness In Wonderland is out on December 16^th via Age 101. - HM
