VöK WAITING

It's no secret that Scandinavia have a fairly unbeatable reputation for beautifully atmospheric electro-pop; enter Vök. The Icelandic trio - Margrét Rán (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Andri Enoksson (saxophone, synths) and Ólafur Alexander (guitar, bass) - are named after their word for ‘hole in the ice’ and originally hail from Hafnarfjörður, a town famous for allegedly being home to a large, hidden elvish settlement. It's no surprise then that the music they create is chilling and filled with subtle mystery while maintaining that Scandi-pop thing that continues to inspire and intrigue. Shades of Swedish/Aussie group Kate Boy are evident in "Waiting" as gently industrial bass pads move the action along below a cool wash of synths and cracking electronic percussion. Rán's vocal work too brings seduction and a hushed sense of elegant fascination. With a sold out show at London's Lexington on the cards for 21 March, 2016 seems well set for Vök to make their mark in this ever-impressive field. -G.O.B.
