Detroit musician and producer Shigeto has always incorporated electronic, broken beats and hip hop elements in his production...until now. His latest release is an EP entitled Versions, which marks his first venture into pure jazz. The opening track from the EP is ‘Back to Basics’ - a fitting title for the stripped back production style. Dramatic drum rolls introduce the song, along with sparkly piano embellishments and percussion that glistens like clear water. Within the calmness, the saxophone plays with a spiritual integrity. Drums have the fragility of butterflies’ wings and the bass accompanies with gentle hums like a bumblebee, creating a sonic sanctuary with the beating of a golden sun. -Ellie Rose-Davies
