Shearwater aka Jonathan Meiburg of Okkervil River fame is certainly good at crafting grand rock anthems in a touchingly intimate way, as his heartfelt but thumpingly gorgeous tune ‘Only Child’ bleeds emotion. The descriptively mysterious chorus “they would never have gunned down an only child”, is just one more reason that people obsess about the meanings and layers of Meiburg's songs. Shearwater’s latest album Jet Plane and Oxbow was recorded in Los Angeles and Austin over two years with an array of collaborators, including film composer Brian Reitzell (Lost in Translation OST) and Wye Oaks’s Jenn Wasner.
