MISHAL MOORE DARKNESS

It’s been a while since Los Angeles musician Mishal Moore has released new music in earnest, with only one track ‘J T T O U’ making an appearance last year, but as we can hear from newest single ‘Darkness’, this sparsity is surely because Moore has been delving into new facets of her creativity. While her previous EP, I’m Not A Hipster, was self-described as 'electronic folk' and heavily influenced by Africana rhythms and campfire horror stories; this new iteration of her sound is evokes a more supernatural, genre-less aesthetic. The haunting atmosphere of ‘Darkness’ immediately comes into play with a brooding bass guitar and a gong-like sound, while a nod to African music is subtly given with the use of a shekere. The jewel to this eerie crown has to be Mishal Moore’s ethereal vocal performance, accentuated with generous sweeps of reverb in the production. Her voice is reminiscent of Bedouine or Kadhja Bonet, a relic from a golden bygone era, brought to life as a ghostly visitor in ‘Darkness’. - Hannah Thacker
