LET'S EAT GRANDMA HOT PINK

Who could surely forget the emergence of renegade teenage duo Let’s Eat Grandma back in 2016 with their debut album I, Gemini? Since then the London-based pair took to the underground, seeking to expand their sound beyond the confines of that record, and that’s exactly what they’ve achieved with new single ‘Hot Pink’. Produced by none other than the boundary-pushing SOPHIE, the single is an awakening for the new age of pop. With Let’s Eat Grandma’s signature juvenile vocals stepping onto the minimalist electronic expanse set out in the first forty-five seconds, the track suddenly switches up a gear or two (or ten), for a highly metallic beat transition that you could call something like 'industrial trap'. Packed with attitude, the LEG girls sassily repeat “oh”, before a “wait a minute”, to introduce the incendiary chorus. Here, the colour hot pink becomes the ultimate symbol of “the misconceptions of femininity and masculinity and the power of embracing both of them.” Just when you think the track has reached the limits of dichotomy, the chorus is followed by a ‘00s R&B cool-down. The power collaboration of Let’s Eat Grandma and SOPHIE has set the bar really, really high. ‘Hot Pink’ is modernist sophistication beyond words. - HT
