THE FREE NATIONALS ON SIGHT

The Free Nationals are expanding beyond their origins as Anderson Paak’s live band. Their third and most recent single 'On Sight' features a number of collaborators including JID, Kadhja Bonet & MIKNNA, following suit from their previous releases which feature artists such as Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Kali Uchis and Mac Miller. The new single is lusciously chilled with a modest groove. Metallic synth noises introduce the tune as a funky bass line smoothly moves over the simple drum beat with a crunchy snare. The xylophone mirrors the retro wah guitar riff, creating a melodic pop hook and Kadhja Bonet's vocals are naturally hushed and high in pitch, embellished by both rhythmic and atmospheric backing. MIKNNA's R&B vocal is subtly auto-tuned as he sings enticingly, "Baby I want your love, you know I need it". Later in the song, JID comes in with a rap that's freshening and solidifies the track from its previously soft and effected style of vocals. JID's style is sharply defined in his depth of tone and unusual use of melody. Overall, 'On Sight' is a warm and hazy funk-pop tune, sewed together with a diverse range of talented collaborators. -Ellie Rose-Davies
