‘Holy’ is taken from Jamila Woods’ extraordinary debut album, HEAVN, which is inspired by the challenges she faced as a black woman growing up in her hometown of Chicago. Originally released last summer, HEAVN has been given a fresh lease of life courtesy of Jagjaguwar and Closed Sessions, and to celebrate Woods has just dropped some stunning visuals to ‘Holy’. As the track is an ode to the importance of self-love, the Sam Bailey-directed video features Woods being, literally, elevated by everyday cleansing rituals. The results are stunning, and make great use of the Psalm 23:4-inspired lyrics: ‘Though I walk through the darkest valley I will fear no love / I’m not lonely, and I’m holy by my own’. As Woods’ original album has been taken offline, we can only hope that there is more in store from this exciting collaboration. -HM
