STEVIE WOLF LOW

New York City newcomer Stevie Wolf follows up debut ‘Who’ with another indie-pop gem that seeks to recharge those emotional batteries when you’re feeling a little ‘Low’. Wolf once again leaves us with a short momento: “this one is for all the empty days.” That bluesy guitar makes a return, although in a more stripped-back setting this time around, perfect for the pensive, aching emotion portrayed by this excellent songwriter. With potent verses like “Oh they chuck it up, imaginary sadness, chemical imbalance, call it what you want, I suffer it in silence,” it’s clear that the musician is no stranger to low moods, dark days, perhaps even depression. A strutting guitar and sporadic drum beat leads the way to an explosive chorus: a volcano of pent up feeling. It’s an incredibly honest and vulnerable portrayal of the hole that depression creates around an individual, the frustration of others' misunderstanding and the unforgiving frustration targeted at oneself for not being “strong” enough to break free of it. We all know how important it is to speak about mental health these days, and so to hear a song with true comprehension of depression and low mood is sure to take root with many people who hear themselves in Stevie Wolf’s lyrics. - HT
