LOLA DE LA MATA STEROCILIA

Conceptual sound artist Lola de la Mata has released an emotionally charged piece of experimental music taken from her upcoming debut album. Inspired by her own explorations of tinnitus (she was encouraged to give up music when diagnosed with tinnitus and vertigo in 2019), ‘Sterocilia’ is an avant-garde soundscape led by her own fluttering voice, which, in duet with a Claravox theremin, journeys above an intricate bed of unique noise. She reimagines heartbeats and tinnitus phantoms through metal, glass, ceramic and ice instruments inspired by the form of the middle and inner ear, giving each sound its own timbre and purpose within the piece. Alongside her current PhD studies into the under-researched intersection between music and tinnitus, she is releasing her debut album, Oceans on Azimuth, on May 8th, 2024. -Dan Peeke
