ITOLDYOUIWOULDEATYOU DIVINE VIOLENCE

Languid and wilting, itoldyouiwouldeatyou's 'Divine Violence' is an at times exhausted, at others enraged depiction of LGBTQ people's ongoing struggle in the modern day. Frontman Joey Ashworth articulates those conflicting emotions with both beauty and brawn, darting from semi-whispered passages into all out screams on a heel-turn. "The straight kids get away with this shit all the time," he notes of his increasingly aggressive thoughts, before calling out their oppressors: "I’m telling you: You aren’t scared enough, you don’t hate enough, you aren’t grown / I’m here, I’m queer / There’s fucking blood on my hands." Backed up by the delicately mutating math-rock of his bandmates, it makes for a captivating and poignant addition to a canon which already boasts an essential debut EP, I Am Not Your Fault. - TC
