IRIS LUNE SEWING SKYLINES TO SHORES

For their latest single ‘Sewing Skylines to Shores’, Brooklyn four-piece Iris Lune imagine the inward worlds of Virginia Woolf and her husband Leonard Woolf leading up to, including and after the novelist’s suicide in 1941. It’s a desperately sad song hinges on lines of gripping imagery, such as “curled in the waves, eyes flutter softly” and “the salt and the seaweed are draping his heart.” Lead singer Ella Joy is surely the only voice for this story, from those sensitive whispers to liberating lifts; it’s a highly impressive performance. The rest of the song meanwhile is a swerving, highly-modern electronic composition that may remind some of Little Dragon combined with the experimental production of up-and-coming talents like CNTR or Fhin and audiovisual artists like Queen Alaska. The dramatism of Iris Lune’s is something to behold and it also marks the first songwriting collaboration between guitarist Asher Kurtz and vocalist Joy, who describes ‘Sewing Skylines to Shores’ as “inspired by the story of Virginia Woolf’s suicide, the person finds his or her way to clarity and peace through parting from this world, but there are many ways to find that freedom.” - HT
