LEX LOW DRIFTING

2016 has been a year of change for 23-year-old musician Lex Low as he’s moved from the rain soaked streets of London to the warmer climes of Los Angeles. Reflecting this new situation, Lex Low has produced a refreshed and revised sound in ‘Drifting’. It’s much sparser than preceding track ‘Higher’ and has certainly moved on from the romantic pop-R&B melodies of last year’s Mystery EP. Alex Treharne explains why this song is so different: “About a month ago I found myself in a new coffee shop with a few hours to spare and produced the instrumental - the lack of guitar was due to circumstance rather than choice.” Co-written with local Californian Dani Poppitt, Lex Low goes on to say that this track is “about trying to reconnect with a love that’s floating away”. You can hear that his voice is audibly detached and suitably drifting, reminiscent at times of Dessert’s lead vocalist, but Treharne doesn’t stick solely to these stoic lines, as his voice spirals upward to profess “we don’t need to be another drifting love.” The track itself is a mechanical mesh of warped vocal clips, springy synth percussion and a whole load of unnamable digital noises that show off Lex Low’s arrangement and production skills at their finest. - HT
