LISTED

RENDEZ VOUS

In this ‘Listed’ feature, we get to know the most radicalist up-and-coming stars through a themed list of their top musical picks.

This time we caught up with Parisian noise-merchants Rendez Vous.

Following their promising 2016 EP
Distancewhich saw reverb-heavy guitars wailing over washed-out vocals, Rendez Vous' abrasive recent List Picks 'Double Zero' and 'Sentimental Animal' served as a powerful mission statement for a band who are seriously upping their game. Toeing the line between sinister post-punk, atmospheric goth and experimental noise-rock, the rising French quintet's highly-anticipated debut album Superior State came out last month via Artefact Records and it's an absolute beast.

Currently on a mammoth EU tour, which included a recent London headline show at the MOTH Club, we managed to get in touch with the band during some ever-exciting time in the van. Consisting of a carefully-selected variety of the band's favourite tracks, it's time to buckle up for Rendez Vous' aptly-titled Superior Sounds playlist.

***

1. Virgin Prunes – ‘Ulakanakulot’

This instrumental is taken from the Prunes’ only true studio album ...if I Die, I Die and was produced by Colin Newman (Wire).

2. Ramleh – ‘Product of Fear’

If you like Tim Hecker and want to dig deeper...

3. Emperor – ‘Witches Sabbath’

Emperor is one of the quintessential Norwegian black metal bands. This old school BM overall aesthetic has influenced us a lot - from the typical lo-fi guitar sound to the band logos’ typos…

4. Ministry – ‘Flashback’

One of our favorite songs - one of the sonic directions we pushed towards on Superior State.

5. DISCLOSE – ‘dying of disease-fear of the war’

Classic D-beat, level asian.

6. WARTHOG – ‘Self Titled 7”’

Killer hardcore punk band from NYC led by Chris Hansell (previously in The Men). There’s a bunch of great punk bands over there right now, Toxic State puts out their records. We love the artwork by Alex Heir on this 7”, reminiscent of 1920s USSR propaganda.

7. Godflesh – ‘Frail’

Super industrial early Godflesh is great. This one is a bit more contemplative and dreamy but still sick!

8.Psyche – ‘I'm a Gentleman’

There’s an interesting ambivalent feel to this track: almost dancey but kinda frightening/anxiety-provoking. This duality is something we’ve been trying to recreate.

9. Implog – ‘She Creatures’

B-side from Implog’s first 7’’, a piece of New York No Wave history...

10. Inquisition – ‘Desolate Funeral Chant’

One of our favorite current metal bands, a duo formed in Colombia who migrated to the US. Must-see live act!
