LIST PICK

WILEY FROM ATLANTA CHAMPION

Wiley From Atlanta is keeping it real consistent with yet another piece of his brooding, jazz-laced hip-hop. This time it’s ‘Champion’, and unlike the past List Picks ‘Blood Orange’ and ‘Shells On The Rug’, this track doesn’t deal with love or heartbreak. In fact, according to the Atlanta rapper ‘Champion’ originated as a poem about masculinity and "how strict and suffocating the boundaries and expectations can be." He adds: "The song is for anyone who has ever felt that they don't fit into the box they've been put in ... about standing strong in the face of adversity, and not being afraid to be yourself." The visuals for this fiery number take us to the rain-soaked streets of Atlanta after nightfall, with a tattered Wiley despondently rapping about the pitfalls of masculine ideals, such as violence and hidden emotions. By the end of the video, Wiley has his head shaved, like Samson cutting off the source of his strength, but in doing so the rapper is stronger than before. Keep an eye out for Wiley From Atlanta’s debut project, out this April. - Hannah Thacker
