SQUID SLUDGE
Squid have been firm favourites here at TMR since their Speedy Wunderground debut 'The Dial'. Yesterday the eclectic quintet announced their signing to groundbreaking British indie label Warp Records and to celebrate they've shared a spaced-out new single. Sporting a characteristically krautrocky backbone, flickers of wah-effected guitar and clunky cowbell strikes punctuate the hypnotic bass line. With keys player Arthur Leadbetter's hair-brained synth work creeping further to the forefront than on previous releases, 'Sludge' is a decidedly less pop-y outing. Pre-empting the solitary situation that we've found ourselves in recent weeks and days, 'Sludge' "was kind of written about self-isolation before it was a government enforced lifestyle." Throwing reference to trash TV and celebrity chefs (we're betting Gordon Ramsay), vocalist/drummer Ollie Judge's dynamic delivery adds vibrancy to the stagnant subject matter.
