We're not often lost for words here at TMR, but the exhilarating new single from rising Brighton outfit Squid was enough to stop us in our tracks. Following Black Midi's incredible 'bmbmbm', the 25th release from Dan Carey & Pierre Hall's one-of-a-kind London record label Speedy Wunderground maintains their extremely high standards. Recorded over the space of a day by Carey himself, 'The Dial' is a masterful fusion of funkadelic indie-rock kept grounded by a sturdy motorik drumbeat. Veering between ridiculously catchy verses and visceral build ups, drummer/vocalist Ollie Judge echos the playfulness of the B-52s Fred Schneider calling out confidently above the mix. Musically touching on too many brilliant bands to mention, Squid have somehow created something extremely exciting completely unique and we can't wait to hear more. -Holly Mullineaux
