GEOWULF HE'S 31

How time flies! Unbelievably, it’s been a year since we last featured alt-pop faves Geowulf with their single ‘Sunday’, as heard on debut album Great Big Blue. Now, Star Kendrick and Toma Banjanin are gearing up to release their sophomore record, My Resignation, this October. The pair already shared ‘I See Red’ from the album, and this month we have folk-tinged slow burner ‘He's 31’ to pour over. Fronted by Kendrick’s smokey, pensive vocals, this track is a striking turn towards sixties pop with those flower child melodies and Beatles-esque guitars. Pivoting on the oxymoronic upbeatness of ‘He's 31’, the lyrics speak of the disappointment that love can throw at you. Elaborating on these sanguine lines, Kendrick says that the song is about “Trying to balance expectations and disappointment seems to have been a bit of a theme the last few years for me. I guess this song is a love song  about disappointment.”. As she further recalls, “When writing it I felt very raw & upset which I think comes through in the lyrics. Music has always been that space for me; where you can take all your disappointments/expectations and then try to make something of them.” You can feel the weight of Kendrick’s emotional expression through the swell of sound that breaks into that vibrant, brutally honest chorus. It’s a real takeaway moment from the band. Not only do we have more music to look forward to in the run up to My Resignation LP, but Geowulf also have loads of dates penned in the UK and US throughout July and August, which you can check out here. - Hannah Thacker
