TMR TALKS TO...

PELUCHé

In this interview feature, we get to know the most radicalist up and coming stars on the planet.

This time we caught up with London's transcendental trio Peluché to talk about everything from disco dancing to Flog It!

Appearing for the first time back in 2014 with their sugary yet sinister debut single 'Cinnamon' and its seductive dub-inspired follow up 'Sin', it wasn't long before Peluché's genre-defying approach caught the ear of renowned producer and Speedy Wunderground head-honcho Dan Carey. Heading into the studio to create their most surreal piece to date, 'The Guy With The Gammy Eye', which spanned a substantial 5 minutes as well as featuring Carey's signature Swarmatron sounds, appeared on the label's brilliant 'Year 2' compilation alongside the likes of Kate Tempest, Loyle Carner and Teleman.

Having already been tipped by The Guardian as their 'New Band of the Week', Peluché released their intoxicating EP Utopia Village in 2016 via London-based tastemaker label RIP Records with standout track 'Swim' beckoning a further flurry of online praise for its danceable bass line, deep grooving drums and dizzying electronic elements.

Finding a home with experimental indie label One Little Indian (best known as the home of Icelandic icon Björk) earlier this year, Peluchè's truly stunning debut album Unforgettable is finally here and we couldn't wait to find out more about its making.

TMR: We've been long-term Peluché fans here at TMR but we'd love to know the story of how you met and why you started playing music together?

So happy you like us TMR. Rhapsody and I met at art college, and one day I went back to her place and she played me some songs on her guitar, apparently I laughed at her! But I actually loved it, I bought a guitar shortly after and we started to jam! We would do open mic nights just us which were fun and terrifying, then we started to look for a drummer. We found Sophie fatefully through a wonderful woman in a customer service encounter. As soon as we met up with her in the late Scar studios we just became complete! We never looked back.

TMR: You seem to have taken your time with the album and we can honestly say it was worth the wait. How does it feel now that it's finally out there?

We are very happy with Unforgettable. We actually wrote and finished it last year, and then sat on it. We just didn’t have the means to release it... until One Little Indian picked us up and released it for us ❤

TMR: The album's title track 'Unforgettable' is one of the most beautiful songs we've heard in a long time. Do you have a favourite track on the album and if so what is it and why?

‘Is It Gonna Rain’ because it was especially flukey, and feels like it could go on forever.

TMR: We noticed that you chose Syd Kemp (HMLTD, Vanishing Twin, Thurston Moore), who engineered your first EP Utopia Village, to work on the album. What was it like working with him?

Syd is amazing, and we are very lucky to have developed such a comfortable and still productive relationship with him. He compliments our style very well, and i think he likes our little quirks which makes finishing songs easy as mistakes become seen like little jewels.

TMR: Can you tell us a bit more about your writing process in general. Is it purely jam based or do you have preconceived ideas?

We just jam and listen back to it. Then jam again and maybe record it again, listen back, then work out a structure together. I don’t think our pre conceptions are even discussed, but somehow they don’t clash. Music can become the actual conversation between each other, that we wouldn’t have had if we spoke about it first.

TMR: Also, the album feels very original and seems to hint towards a number of different musical styles and genres without fully jumping in. What kind of music are you inspired by and do you all have similar musical tastes?

The music we can agree on most are club classics, latin fusion and Herbie Hancock. Apart from that our tastes can differ. When we do DJ sets we will play some real random songs that we love! We share the new music we find with each other, and have a dance to it sometimes too.

TMR: Speaking of dancing, we've been thoroughly enjoying your recent 'Learn To Dance With Peluché' YouTube series. How did that come about?

Thanks! It was fun to make. We asked Jordan from TENENTEN to make our music video for us for 'Figure Me Out', and he also suggested we do something else. He asked us what we like to do in our spare time all together, and we said dancing! So he made the learn to dance series as a way for people to get to know us, we are very serious about dancing as you can see!

TMR: Do you have any hobbies other than playing music and dancing that we might not expect?

We all really love flog it, and admin.

TMR: As a blog specialising in new music, we'd love to know if you've seen or heard any exciting new bands recently that you'd like to mention?

Auntie Flo, Tirzah, Children of Zeus and Sirathy Korwar.

TMR: Finally, now that the album is out, what can we expect from Peluché over the next few months?

There are many more shed sessions to come, and when we are out the shed we will be touring the world... (TBC)!!

Our next album is in the pipeline too!
