THE GREAT ESCAPE 2019: LISTED

PORRIDGE RADIO

Concluding this special run of ‘Listed’ features, in which we get to know the incredible artists playing our Alt. Escape showcase through a themed list of their top musical picks, we get the scoop from rising slacker-rock dabblers Porridge Radio.

Bubbling under the radar for a number of years, Porridge Radio is the Brighton-born brainchild of Dana Margolin. Beginning, as many great bands do, as an emotionally-motived bedroom project, Porridge Radio quickly grew limbs, enticing new members with Margolin's charming lo-fi recordings. Gaining a stellar reputation for their high-energy live shows, the now quartet are finally getting a taste of the recognition they deserve. With a summer of exciting festival slots ahead, we can't wait for their intimate performance at our very own TGE showcase in collaboration with
Hand In Hive and CALM.

Picking a theme of "The Songs That Can Be Played On Repeat For 24 Hours", Dana explains: "Each song I’ve chosen in this playlist has at some point been the only song I can listen to for days, sometimes weeks. I love these songs, and they love me.
I have a spotify playlist of these, I add more when I remember them."

***

1. The Goon Sax – ‘Boyfriend’

I live in London and it sucks, I especially hate the tube. About a month ago I was on a really horrible tube journey and put this song on repeat for an hour and I think it stopped me dying.

2. Cherry Glazerr – ‘Daddi’

The raw power of this song makes me feel like a total bitch.

3. This Elegant Gull – ‘Social Media’

The person who wrote this song is 11 years old and she writes better songs than anyone else in the world? I lay in bed for 7 hours listening to this on repeat once. It’s so good.

4. Speedy Ortiz – ‘Lucky 88’

It’s like being punched in the face over and over again.

5. Micachu & The Shapes – ‘Oh Baby’

Our drummer Sam once made me a tape for my car and one side was just 45 minutes of this song on repeat and I would listen to it constantly and then rewind it and start again.

6. Young Marble Giants – ‘Music For Evenings’

When I first heard it, I didn’t know what to do with myself and it took me about a month to recover and listen to something else.

7. Ian Sweet – ‘Hiding’

I just want to spoon this song into my gut.

8. Coma Cinema – ‘Ambrosia In The Bitter World’

I love this so much I don’t know where to find the words.

9. Charli XCX – ‘Boys’

Potentially the only song I listened to last summer.

10. Adult Mom – ‘Survival’

I wept when I saw them play it live last year. They always just like… go there.

Be sure to catch Porridge Radio at the free Hand In Hive x TMR x CALM Showcase tomorrow at The Mucky Duck in Brighton.
