THE GREAT ESCAPE 2019: LISTED

BREATHE PANEL

South Coast newcomers Breathe Panel are a breath of cool, sea air. The breezy bunch are a firm TMR favourite, the likes of ‘Sunrise / Sunshine’ and ‘Hue’ conjuring a spacious, stunning otherworld - one that’s seen them share stages with fellow TMR best buds Swimming Tapes on their recent UK tour.

Their self-titled debut album, released late last year, is a sure-fire contender for one of 2018’s sleeper hits - the FatCat-released first work is an expansive effort, one that would be impressive for bands with twice Breathe Panel’s lifespan.

Now, their swaying, seafaring charm is returning home to Brighton, with Breathe Panel joining the line-up for this year’s showcase at The Great Escape, alongside our friends in Hand In Hive and CALM. Ahead of Friday’s show, we’ve prompted the Breathe Panel boys to really flex their creative muscles and showcase their visual side, with the below “Music To Paint To” playlist.

***

1. Paint – ‘Daily Gazette’

Nick: This is a great song, and they're called Paint so it's the opener.

2. Bert Jansch – ‘Smokey River’

Benjamin: See where your painting ends up after letting the swerve-ridden guitar lines wash you away for a mere 2mins 52secs.

3. Cool Marmite – ‘Sharing Waves’

Benjamin: Allow the water pot to flood your brush bristles. Try something new? Surrender to new colours that haven't yet made an entrance. Create a colour?

4. Red House Painters – ‘Cabezon’

Josh: Another one with paint in the name.

5. Jennie Lawless – ‘You Don't Have to Call Me on Your Birthday’

Nick: Really nice ditty, that gently floats in and then it's gone. Just like a paint stroke... or a thought between strokes.

6. Kyle Bobby Dunn – ‘Zendel Holiday Hangover Toccata’

Josh: For the middle ground of your painting experience, when you've settled in and need something to give you five and a half minutes of soft focus. My favourite song off his new album and possibly favourite of his ever.

7. Jim O’Rourke – ‘Not Sport Martial Art’

Josh: A steady trotter for when you're nearing the end and can feel the tingle of it all coming together nicely. Cue the second half of the song for a misplaced stroke and a frantic repair job.

8. Charlie Coxedge – ‘Dust’

Alex: This is a great moment within your painting to take a moment to put down your brushes and reflect on the experience. Take in the smell of the acrylic/watercolour/gouache/oil and forget about any preconceptions.

9. Wilco – ‘Impossible Germany’

Alex: Settle back into the piece, maintain a soft focus and allow the brush to do the work.

10. Jon Brion – ‘Lady Bird’

Nick: From the movie Lady Bird. It's the main theme and includes a few motifs that appear throughout the rest of the soundtrack. So when it's finally together as one piece it's truly satisfying - like the end of a painting made up of sound.

Breathe Panel is out now and be sure to catch their set at the free Hand In Hive x TMR x CALM Showcase on Friday 10th May at The Mucky Duck in Brighton.
