SHOUT OUT

LIARS

In this feature we ask mainstays of the indie establishment who they think will be the next big act to break.

This time we speak with acerbic post punk outfit, Liars.

Despite being, for a time, so closely associated with the mid-00s post punk revival scene in New York, Liars have continually thwarted such attempts at pigeon-holing ever since, freely rotating through instrumentation, technology and even genres, in an effort to keep the raw spirit of their work alive.

Since the band’s formation in 2000, Liars have gone on to create a shape-shifting multitude of ever challenging releases; often evading clear-cut classification, and garnering an extremely dedicated cult following in the process. Select musical guises include the stark primitivism of Drum’s Not Dead, the surreal noise rock of Sisterworld and more recently, the frenetic electronic exploration of Mess - all of which carve out a sonic territory that’s all their own, while remaining instantly recognizable as the work of this extraordinary band.

Following the release of remarkable new cut ‘Cred Woes’ - the first glimpse of Liars’ forthcoming LP, TFCF - we caught up with (now sole member) Angus Andrew to find out which up-and-coming artists he’s championing at the moment…

HXXS

This two piece from Bakersfield, CA contacted me a little while back to chat about the music they were making. Our paths aligned, as they say, and we went deep. I told them I thought Jeannie’s voice was amazing in that Beth Gibbons kinda way and that I wanted to hear more! Since then I’ve stayed in touch with Gavin and Jeannie as they criss-cross the US playing everywhere imaginable. I’m excited for these two. They have a really genuine and clear love for what they do, constantly writing, re-mixing and pushing their ideas out in the world. I hope you hear them soon.

EUGENE WARD / DRO CAREY / TUFF SHERM

I first heard about Eugene Ward through his Paint En Pointe record which is an album made up of experimental compositions for a series of dance performances. I loved it. Really rhythmic and cinematic. But yeah, turns out Eugene Ward is also Dro Carey and Tuff Sherm! which are both quite hard hitting techno projects. Impressive. Really excited for what’s to come from Mr. Ward - in whatever form he chooses…

EXHIBITIONIST

Recently I moved to Australia so yeah listening lots to the great local radio stations here. I heard this song called ‘Hands’ by Exhibitionist for the first time just the other day. It’s pretty amazing. I thought it was Kelela. In fact it's a Sydney musician called Kirsty Tickle who plays all the instruments apart from the drums. Nice. To date I believe it’s the only release from Exhibitionist but this track makes me ever so curious for what else's in store.

Keep an eye out for TFCF (released on August 25th) and catch Liars at VISIONS Festival on Saturday 5th August.
