ZOE GRAHAM INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH

Let’s dive into the irresistible well of organic sounds delivered by Glaswegian singer-songwriter Zoe Graham in her new single ‘Industrial Strength’. Touted by BBC Radio Scotland and Scottish Music Convention as an artist worth paying attention to, Graham showcases her folky alt-rock style in her Hacket & Knackered EP, and it’s the special playfulness of ‘Industrial Strength’ that has drawn our ear here. It’s a song of contrasts, as personified by velcro (all of things!) and the earthy instrumentation which switches between naturalistic note arrangements to stop-start grooves. You’d be hard pressed to find another songwriter who takes the astronautical material of velcro and turns it into a metaphor for romance, as we hear in the opening line, 'man of the south-east stole my hearts, / stuck them to his khaki suit, / industrial strength velcro, / bonding him to them and you.' Zoe Graham possesses a novelistic, storytelling style that makes her swaying indie-folk even more engaging. - Hannah Thacker
