PHORIA WHEN EVERYTHING WAS MINE

Brighton outfit Phoria make their comeback this week following the release of their 2016 debut album, Volition, after which the band had “a much needed but somewhat uneasy quiet.” It’s this unsettled recuperation that has led to the inspired beauty of ‘When Everything Was Mine’. Theoretically simple with its repeated sentence and cyclical song structure, Phoria are able to take this concept and propel it into the stratosphere. One moment we’re sitting in a quiet room with a piano, the next we’re rushing through a galaxy of electronics, sustained samples, and sound filling all the spaces. ‘When Everything Was Mine’ evokes the experience of memory, from quiet regret to nostalgic joy. It’s a truly brilliant return, one that’s backed by b-side ‘RROTOR’, a sombre complement to the a-side. We can only hope that this double release hints towards a much awaited sophomore record. - Hannah Thacker
