MAGDALENA BAY SET ME OFF

Perfectly paired duo Magdalena Bay (Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin) present ‘Set Me Off’, a syrupy dance-pop banger that manages to reside in the glossy, teen culture of the ‘90s and some kind of hyper-real future. The underpinning electronic loop sounds almost like early garage, with considerably more tin, while other elements like a high-powered tambourine, a slapping synth drum, sparkly electronics or Tenenbaum's deceptively sweet vocals provide a consistent, addictive vibrancy. Any prejudice you may have held before against pop as the vanilla genre will be challenged by ‘Set Me Off’, which manages to sound as ballsy as riot grrrl bands and as reality-challenging as post-Internet music. It’s still pop, that we can’t deny, but it’s the most flavourful, punchy sugar rush that Magdalena Bay have given us yet. - HT
