WEDNESDAY BITTER EVERYDAY

North Carolina indie rock vanguard Wednesday share Iris DeMent-inspired single 'Bitter Everyday', the fourth preview from their upcoming album Bleeds. Previous singles have set high expectations for the new record. The latest from Asheville outfit, 'Bitter Everyday', shows them expand upon their continually impressive ability to balance the white-hot heaviness of guitar-heavy instrumentation, agile vocal dynamics of frontwoman Karly Hartzman, and attentive storytelling that results in narratives with remarkable depth. 'Bitter Everyday', as Hartzman explains, "...is a song formed around my desperate desire to tell the story about how in 2019, this lady came up on our porch at like 3 in the morning when Jake and our friend Andrew were out there drinking and playing guitar. She asked them if she could sing them a song she had written, she had an incredible voice. They recorded a voice note of it and showed it to me the next morning when I woke up. I knew which lady it was, she was a houseless person who walked around the downtown area a lot. Weeks later, I was walking home from work, and I saw a photo of her on a telephone pole. It was an old mug shot of her, and she was done up in juggalo makeup. The description on the paper said she was wanted for murder. The chorus is an homage to Iris DeMent's song ‘Easy's Gettin' Harder Everyday.’” While many of Wednesday's tracks contain stories that seem challenging to articulate into song, the band consistently do so with great care and an unmistakable passion for capturing the essence of a tale. 'Bitter Everyday' is no exception. In the close of the song, as the wall of tight riffage lowers to isolate Hartzman's voice singing "Between broadways and the ramp to 23/ Swimming through/ Cause to you it’s just like / Swimming through a cold spot in the lake / The sweetest parts of life keep getting bitter everyday" against acoustic guitar, what may have been a fleeting moment lingers to a point of feeling unforgettable. -Kayla Sandiford
