‘Moment Before We Met’ is a gritty shoegaze adjacent cut from Manchester quintet Umarells. It’s a shift toward a darker sound for the band, with tense, brooding palm-mutes underpinning Imogen Badrock’s increasingly passionate vocal performance. The chorus is a stark contrast, built above a twisting mesh of distorted guitar and rattling hi-hats. “It’s about the gap between everything; the not knowing, the stuff that eats you up,” they explain. “The curse of being a sensitive soul. The fogs. The bad omen or the foreshadowing that nature delivers. It’s feeling misunderstood but also misunderstanding.” The band are playing in the UK and Italy this summer and autumn. -Dan Peeke
