It's easy to see why iconic London label Warp have snapped up the talents of Jasper Marsalis (aka Slauson Malone 1), as he delivers yet another incredible single from his newly announced LP EXCELSIOR. Following last month's explorative offering 'Voyager', 'New Joy' is another intricately woven composition. Balancing off-kilter guitars with creative vocals, precise beats, and the occasional well-placed synthesizer, bold effects punctuate the piece, providing a sense of intimacy and/or grandeur where necessary. Masterfully navigating multiple dynamic peaks and troughs, Slauson Malone 1's handling of instrumentation is both accomplished and enviable. Pooling from a broad and varied sonic palette, to categorise his music into one, two, or even three, specific genres would be a gross injustice to say the least. A track with so much to discover, 'New Joy' provides exactly that as we await what's set to be a truly spectacular album. -Holly Mullineaux
