RETAIL DRUGS LITTLE DOG
NYC's Retail Drugs share 'little dog', the final single from their upcoming album rECKless dRIVing. The new track follows previous releases 'person A' and 'manny' as part of a larger collection of deep cuts from the project's debut LP i love you so!. 'little dog' is a lighter, more playful contrast to the fast, static tempo of 'project A' and slow-warbled sludge of 'manny'. Vocalist Jake Brooks taps into a more sensitive corner of his range, offering sympathetic, curious observations of a dog playing in the sun that are gently reassured by the repeated phrase: "It's alright, it's alright". There's a mellow tone to the acoustic guitar, percussive patter and plump bassline that plays off of Brooks' buoyant harmonies. Paired with slow-motion music video of a little white dog playing in the backyard -- captured in a low-angled panorama -- Retail Drugs perfectly evoke the feeling of transported into a memory. Particularly, one of a hungover Brooks actually singing the song to a skittish dog. 'little dog' is a fleeting snapshot of a story that's a little bit sweet and a little bit silly, adding something memorable to the mundane. rECKless dRIVing is due this Friday, 1st August via Angel Tapes/Fire Talk. -Kayla Sandiford
