REJOICER LEMONS

Tel Aviv-based producer Yuvi Havkin (known as Rejoicer) has left us in awe of his new ambient album Spiritual Sleaze inspired by his spiritual practices and released via Stones Throw Records a couple of weeks ago. As a key figure in Israel's modern beat movement, it's no surprise that Yuvi founded the brilliantly eclectic collective that is Raw Tapes Records, showcasing cutting edge, soul-fuelled music. The new video for B-side album track 'Lemons' is a surreal and wonderful piece of art. It begins with a woman sat on a bright red mushroom then cuts to an alien forest filled with pink plants. A man joins, and the two sit on giant mushrooms meditating and looking peaceful. The surreal elements gives this video a dream-like quality: giant rocks slowly rise out of a lake, backdropped by a huge golden sun and people dance around a fire which is encased by an energetic, spring-like cage of light spiralling around it. The song itself is ambient and relaxed, made up of a percussive track of claps, rattles and shakers, stratified synths, and jazzy bass runs which all create a transcendental sensation. Jenny Penkin's smooth and colourful vocals are soulful and captivating. Check it out. -Ellie Rose-Davies
