Rachel Sermanni’s single ‘What Can I Do’ is a haunting piece of americana gothic that reflects the cavernous and shadowy direction of her upcoming third album, So It Turns, due for release August 23rd. From the very start, the Scottish songwriter’s voice carries an air of suspended hope as each repeated question trails after another. The space around every elongated bass note and drumstick tap is filled with reverberated dramatic pause, until a trickle of tinny guitar begins to weave its way through the dusky soundscape. As ‘What Can I Do’ progresses, these sounds evolve with greater intensity, until the drum smacks and rattling strings consume the song in its entirety. We imagine this song soundtracking a Tarantino western; slowly panning to a lonesome anti-hero trots across the desert plain in horseback.
