As one door closes another door opens for London band pencil as they release their joyful yet melancholy new single 'Wingman'. Signalling the exit of guitarist Cai Burns (aka TMR favourite Blood Wizard), with The Big Moon/Our Girl's Soph Nathan entering stage left (or right, you get the picture), the song is aptly "about endings, beginnings and the spaces in between." Navigating unexpected shifts in timbre, gentle drums lock in dreamy arpeggiated guitars as vocalist Kamran Kahn swoons easily through unusual chord changes. Bursting into an uplifting chorus, reminiscent of strings-driven indie/emo from the noughties (we're talking about you Los Campesinos! or possibly Spinto Band), 'Wingman' is satisfying in its emotive nostalgia. Featuring both Burns and Nathan, 'Wingman' sets pencil up for success from here on out. -Holly Mullineaux
