ORBURY COMMON THE RESIDENT

A duo that stoked our imagination when they signed to the ever-reliable PRAH Recordings 2 years ago, Bristol/Stroud's Orbury Common have just announced their debut album Sylvan Chute. Securing a place in our hearts for their left-field approach to ancient folk pieces and a palpable penchant for electronic music, lead single 'The Resident' expands on these aspects of the pair's sound with the unexpected inclusion of some truly magnificent vocal melodies. Set over textural beats and a liquid, synth-driven backdrop, the band explain: “The Resident’s origins date back years, arguably centuries. The original version, which was a fixture of our live set in 2023, featured the verse’s looping bells, bass synth and beat, alongside ancient Gregorian chant, the melody of which we later emulated when writing our own vocals. Our lyrics and unison vocals came together in a session at the PRAH Foundation in Margate, describing a dream-like vision of a crumbling mythic landscape, through a yearning, reaching lens - a theme that recurs often across Sylvan Chute.” Sylvan Chute will arrive on the 7th of June and be sure to check out the equally intriguing video directed by Alfie Dywer, who's recent works include visuals for Aphex Twin and, perhaps oddly, Eric Andre. -Holly Mullineaux
