ORBURY COMMON FINER SCALES

Put poetically in the accompanying press release to this single, "Orbury Common exists as a place in the musical imagination of Emlyn Bainbridge and Josh Day-Jones: an opalescent, dream-like otherworld of fogged memory and refracted mythology." After the textural twists and turns of the 'The Resident' last month, 'Finer Scales' is an equally impressive follow up. Born from app-generated modular synth beats, the band explain: “I was away from any instruments or a laptop when I started “Finer Scales” so the main percussion and synth sounds were created on a modular synth app called Klankwelle. I slowed and sped up certain sections on a video app then added synth bass and vocals as soon as I was at a computer. I think it was the first time I’d sung on an Orbury Common song but felt like the right time!" Heading towards the release of their debut album Sylvan Chute (releasing on the 7th of June through Prah Recordings), the pair shift their established brand of ambient folklore into an ever so slightly more accessible realm; revealing accomplished melodies and satisfying yet complex song structures along the way. Tune into 'Finer Scales' and check out the equally entrancing visualiser here now. -Holly Mullineaux
