‘American Rules’ is the new release from Indie-Americana duo Nearly Skulls. The duo balance classic and contemporary, with a soaring, guitar-driven soundscape filled with jumpy, Johnny Marr-esque lines matching country rock rhythms. Their lyrics are acerbic, reflective and somewhat confrontational. “From my perspective, the song digs into American exceptionalism, i.e. the belief that America is somehow superior to the rest of the world,” says Paul Sherwood, of the track which, despite being written five years ago, remains eerily relevant. “For a while, I was addicted to American Politics on YouTube, doom-watching for hours every day. This is one of the songs that grew out of that.” The track is taken from their upcoming EP, Pax Americana, which drops soon. -Dan Peeke
