JUST KIDS PARIS, LOS ANGELES
Forged through the purest of intentions, Rachel Still and drummer Maxie Cheer met when Maxie responded to a poorly drawn add that Rachel had posted up at a venue "looking for a drummer to take over the world". Now going by Just Kids, the pair are well on their way. Lifted from their forthcoming EP saccharine, 'paris, los angeles' is an introspective slice of gritty jangle-pop. Held securely by Cheer's rock-solid drumming, Still's ethereal guitar work floats effortlessly between the rhythm section and her own impassioned vocal style. Providing context on the lyrical content, she explains: “The song is a nod to my love of the Wim Wenders film Paris, Texas. As soon as I watched that film, I was floored by it. The way the lead character's introversion and alienation from the world around him is portrayed is so beautiful. He seems so at odds with everything expected of him, and yet he embraces his character with a sense of peace. Having gone away in 2023 to both cities mentioned, I was feeling reflective; watching a lot of friends around me settle down, wondering if I was doing okay in the lane I was in. The song is me trying to comically assess whether I was having a breakdown or if I was actually right where I should be.” saccharine will arrive on the 10th of July and you can catch them live (which you definitely should) on the 12th of July at The Old Blue Last. -Holly Mullineaux
